The Barnstaple Model Railway Club was formed by four friends, in 1971 with an interest in railways, and they met in the disused booking office at Umberleigh station on the Tarka Line, though that name had not been coined then, and built an 00 gauge layout. Later the chance came to move into the top floor of a shop in Barnstaple High Street where an 00 gauge layout was built which ran through holes in the walls from room to room. (An understanding landlord). Later a move was made to the Old Reading Room at Bishops Tawnton by which time the members had moved from 00 gauge to 0 gauge and OAKFORD was built. The Club was fortunate when showing Oakford at the Bristol Model Railway Show in 1991 to be awarded a cup for best layout voted by the visitors at the show. A move was made to premises in Bideford for a couple of years and we now meet weekly at Fremington. The Club has, once again, an 00 gauge layout that you may have seen at our recent exhibition in Christ Church Hall, Bear Street, Barnstaple. The Club also has an 0 gauge layout which can be called upon when needed, and there is now talk of a long term plans for a new 00 guage DCC layout to be planned and built over the next few years. If you feel you might like to join then please don't hesitate to contact us. (Details on the Contact us page). Come and see what we do there will be no pressure to join. At the moment on Club nights some run the layout whilst others sit or stand and chat. Soon we shall be working on details of the new layout and will try to involve everyone.
